WHAT IS A SAMPLE SPACE?
A sample space is a list of all the possible outcomes from anexperiment
Ex: Find the sample space for each of the following experiments:
i)Flip a coin
i)Roll a dice
i)Picking a card from a deck
i)The sum from rolling 2 dice
i)A letter is chosen from the word:CHICAGO BULLS

1st Coin
2nd Coin
3rd Coin
4th Coin
There are 16 different outcomes.
Each branch is a separate outcome

COMPLEMENT EVENTS:
The probability that an event will not occur is equal to itscomplement
ie:             : the probability that event A will occur
: the probability that event A will not occur
Note: If two events                are complements then:
   i)
ii) the two events can not occur at the same time
The sum of their probability will be equal to 100%

Ex: Two dice are rolled, find the probability of the complement
A: event that both dice are even
B: event that a sum greater than 8 is rolled
© Copyright all rights reserved to Homework depot: www.BCMath.ca
Probability that the both dice is not even
Probability that the sum is not greater than 8
We can try finding P(A) first
This means that the sum isless than or equal to 8
Practice: A number is chosen from 0 to 10, “A” is the event thatan odd will be chosen.  Find the probability of the complementof event “A”.
ii) “B” is the event that a prime number is chosen.  Find thecomplement:
Zero is neither even or odd!!!
1 and zero are NOT prime numbers

RELATED EVENTS WITH VENN DIAGRAMS
Venn diagrams can be used to describe the sample space ofan experiment
