SECTION 7.1WHAT IS PROBABILITY

TERMS: OUTCOMES AND EVENTS
When you perform an experiment, there is a set of outcomesthat you can expect
Ie: rolling a dice the outcomes are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6
Outcome: the result from a single trial of an experiment
Events are different from outcomes.  Events include adesired outcome or a set of outcomes from an experiment
the event of rolling an even number {2,4,6}
a number less than 5 {1,2,3,4}
a prime number {2,3,5}
rolling a 4,...etc
Sample Space: a list of all the outcomes from an experiment
ie: When rolling a dice, the sample space is: 1,2,3,4,5, and 6
EXPERIMENTAL VS THEORETICAL PROBABILITY
Probability -  the likelihood or chance that an event willoccur, ranging from zero to one (100%)
Experimental probabilities are based on the results of actualexperiments and vary all the time
When flipping a coin 100 times, what is the experimentalprobability of getting 60 heads?
You can have anything from 0 to 100 heads
Theoretical probability are based on calculations
P(A) – the probability that event “A” will occur

THEORETICAL PROBABILITY
P(A) : the probability that event “A” will occur
If P(A) = 0, then event “A” is impossible
If P(A) = 0.5, there’s a 50% chance that event “A”will happen
If P(A) = 1, then event “A” will certainly happen

EXHOW MANY OUTCOMES ARE THERE FOR EACH EXPERIMENT
i) Drawing a card from a deck
ii) Rolling a dice twice
iii) Drawing two cards from a deck with replacement
There are 52 cards in a deck (excluding jokers)
Use FCP or Create a dice chart (6 x 6)
We have 36 different outcomes
With replacement, we can create a 52 x 52 chart
We have 2704 different outcomes
EXJACK FLIPS A COIN 100 TIMES, HOW MANY HEADS WILLHE GET?

H
Theoretical Probability:
Experimental Probability:
Multiply that by 100 trialsto get the number of heads
Experimentally there could bezero to 100 heads
Activity: Get the class to flip a coin100 times, find the number of heads
The probability from a singletrial is 50%
H
In 100 trials, we will have50 heads
EXA CARD IS CHOSEN FROM A DECK OF 52 CARDS.  WHAT ISTHE PROBABILITY OF GETTING EACH OF THE FOLLOWINGEVENTS?
